MID-UPPER ARM CIRCUMFERENCE TAPE (MUAC) adult
Definition
Device for measuring the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) in adults (18 years and older), including pregnant or breastfeeding women and the elderly.
MUAC is particularly sensitive to acute weight loss, as it reflects the degradation of peripheral muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue.
MUAC measurement can be used as a rapid method for assessing the nutritional status of adults and is increasingly used as a method for identifying adults who require nutritional intervention.
It is particularly useful among PBWG (Pregnant, Breastfeeding Women and Girls) for identifying those who need nutritional supplementation as a preventive measure for poor birth outcomes.
