CHLORHEXIDINE (di)gluconate 5%, solution

Therapeutic Action

Broad-spectrum bis-diguanide antiseptic

5% chlorhexidine digluconate solution (equivalent to 2.8% chlorhexidine), to be diluted before use.

Indications

Antisepsis of minor and superficial wounds and burns, when polyvidone iodine is contraindicated.

Instructions for use

To be used as a 0.05% aqueous solution:

  • For 1 litre of 0.05% solution: dilute 10 ml of the 5% concentrated solution in 990 ml of clear water that has been boiled for a few minutes and then cooled.
  • Before use: mix well

Apply the 0.05% solution to the affected area and allow it to dry. Ensure a minimum contact time of 1 minute to obtain a bactericidal effect.

Soiled wounds: first cleanse with 4% chlorhexidine soap, rinse, then apply the 0.05% aqueous solution as above.

Precautions for Use

Do not use the solution undiluted.

Never mix a freshly prepared solution with any "leftover" solution.

Do not use in combination with soap or other antiseptics (e.g. povidone-iodine) due to incompatibility.

Avoid contact with the brain, meninges, and the middle ear.

Storage

  • Below 25°C - Protect from sunlight
  • After dilution, use the solution immediately; do not store the diluted solution (risk of contamination).
  • Tightly close the bottle after each use to prevent contamination.
