Therapeutic Action

Antiretroviral, nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI)

Indications

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults, adolescents and children (aged two years and older) for whom antiviral therapy is indicated.

First-line treatment of HBV infection in adults with established osteoporosis and/or impaired kidney function.

Instructions for use

The 0.5 mg dosage is intended for paediatric use.

In case of evidence of treatment failure due to confirmed or suspected antiviral resistance to entecavir or supply constraints, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate may be used as an alternative in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age.

Closely monitor:

  • liver function tests (ALT, AST)
  • HBV DNA levels to assess efficacy
  • signs of lactic acidosis or hepatotoxicity

Precautions for Use

Administer with caution in patients with renal impairment. Closely monitor renal function .

Most common side effects: headache, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea.

Spontaneous exacerbations in hepatitis are relatively common and are characterised by transient increases in serum ALT levels.
